What is CASA?

CASA is a not-for-profit organization serving the community. CASA Volunteers are Court Appointed Special Advocates appointed by a Judge to speak on behalf of children who come under the jurisdiction of the court because of child abuse or neglect.

All children have a right to a safe home with loving people to care for them. However, each year in Michigan and Wisconsin, thousands of children experience abuse or neglect. Over 15,000 children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care, relative care, or an institution.

Dear Community:

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Menominee/Marinette (CASA) is proud to announce its 20th anniversary of advocating for children in the family court system.

Since 2004, CASA has been changing the trajectory of children’s lives and helping youth build resilience in adulthood. CASA volunteers provide a voice for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in dependency court proceedings.

Since its inception, more than 80 CASA volunteers have been a voice for the best interests of children in foster care in Menominee & Marinette Counties, providing critical direction to the court to help guide decisions about their future.

CASA believes that each child who has experienced abuse or neglect deserves to have a dedicated adult speaking up for their best interest in court, at school, and in our community. To accomplish this, CASA educates and empowers diverse community volunteers who ensure that each child’s needs remain prioritized in an overburdened child welfare system.

Over the past 20 years, CASA has made a significant impact on the local community. In that time, hundreds of children have had a CASA volunteer by their side. The organization has expanded its reach and services, growing from a volunteer staff of one to operating across two counties, with two full time staff members. CASA Volunteers complete a rigorous training program and commit to staying with their assigned children throughout the life of the case.

CASA also relies on donations from individuals and organizations to fund its programs and services. Through increased community awareness and corporate and individual donations, more people have come to learn about CASA and how to help support its mission.

Our program would not have flourished for the last two decades without the unwavering support of the Marinette/Menominee community. This letter cannot begin to encompass our deep gratitude for your support, whether you've donated, volunteered, advocated, or spread the word, it truly takes a village to make a non-profit succeed. Thank you for everything.

We look forward to many more years of serving the community's most vulnerable children; breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect by giving children hope for the future.

With gratitude,

Faith Sandahl

CASA Executive Director
